Beyonce's surprise album has sold
nearly 1.5 million copies so far, but
not everyone is a fan:
RadarOnline.com has reported Kanye
West claims he had the idea to do a
visual album first.
“Kanye is feeling really defeated
over Beyonce's album doing so well,”
an insider told them. “He wanted to
do a visual album for his 'Dark
Twisted Fantasies' album, but
everyone around him convinced him
it wouldn't work,” the insider
explains. “That's why he ended up
doing one long movie to go with it
[the 35-minute short film,
'Runaway'].”
Making matters worse, his last album
'Yeezus' has sold fewer than a
million copies so far, despite critical
acclaim. The source says, “He's
super-focused on moving forward.
He's working so hard to come up with
something that will eclipse Beyonce
and put him back on top.”
Plus his baby mama Kim Kardashian
“is pushing him to do something major
too,” the source revealed

KANYA CALLS BEYONCE A THIEF
WORLDS DIRTIEST MAN, NEVER SHOWERED FO 60YRS, NEEDS A WIFE
Cleanliness is second to godliness.
But for this man, Cleanliness does
not feature in his vast vocabulary of
words.
Amou Haji who has not washed for
60 years is single and he's looking
for love.
But, to win his heart, you'd have to
accept his rather unconventional
lifestyle.
Amou has not showered for the last
60 years because he believes that
being clean will make him sick, and
his favorite food is surprisingly
rotten porcupine.
Just like many hardworking men, he
loves to relax and this he likes to do
by sitting down and having a smoke,
from a pipe packed with animal
faeces.
Mr Haji, 80, says he chose this way
of life after going through some
emotional setbacks in his youth and
since then - perhaps unsurprisingly
- he has become a bit isolated.
OUR VOTES FOR LUPITA
Lupita Nyong’o has proven to be one
of Kenya’s great exports and we
celebrate her every achievement
back here at home.
Now we have a chance to make her
shine again by giving her our support.
This time, we do not have to sit on
the sidelines and hold our breath to
see whether this actress will pick an
award. This time we get her that
award.
The prestigious EE British Academy
Film Awards (EE BAFTAS) is taking
place on the 16th of February 2014,
and Lupita has been nominated in
the Rising Star category. This is the
only category where the public gets to
have a say by voting for their
favorite star.
All you have to do is visit the voting
page where you can vote for Lupita,
simply by entering your name and
email address. You can only vote
once but that vote could go a long
way in getting her the award. Voting
started on the 6th January 2014 and
will end on 14th February 2014.
She has also been nominated in the
best supporting actress for her
performance in 12 years a slave.
So let’s vote for Lupita and support
our very own.

THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF TEACHER WANJIKU
Her jokes can keep you laughing, but
it’s her Kikuyu accent that always
gives her an edge over competitors
thus keeping her top of her game.
And while many ‘would be suitors’ to
Teacher Wanjiku still try to see the
lady in her, one fan of her's
confessed that it can be quite hard
to think of her in a ladylike manner
but he loves her as a comedian.
Well, the good news is that Teacher
Wanjiku is a proud wife and mother
so critical suitors can take a back
seat.
And while many may highly
underestimate her potential to
become a stunning fashionista, the
true love magazine cover tells a
different tale.
Teacher Wanjiku revealed her other
side courtesy of the True Love
Magazine stylists who dolled he up to
the extent that she looked almost too
fashionable to be a comedian.
MUSTAFA BILA STRESS... HOW ABOUT MARYA
Colonel Mustapha is without a doubt
one of the finest Kenyan artistes
whose prowess has shone bright even
across different musical generations.
Having been part of the popular Deux
Vulture crew alongside Nasty Thomas,
Mustapha is still going hard on his
musical career and as his recent
‘Lenga stress’ song goes…
‘Weka Mkono kwenye hewa … ata
kama umelemewa”
(Put your hands up in the year even
if you have a ton of problems)
And while his leaving Marya was a
problem at first, Mustapha seems to

TURKANA NA DRAMA.... OR LETS CALL IT TRAGIC
Research has shown that HIV prevalence is higher
in marriages or among couples in stable
relationships due to infidelity.
The vice appears to have been legalised through
the phrase mpango wa kando (literally, “side
arrangement” in reference to keeping a
mistress), a practice that has gained currency
among couples.
But the opposite is true among pseudo-pastoral
Turkana people inhabiting the scorched area of
north-western Kenya, thanks to potent cultural
beliefs that have defied modernity.
While the HIV prevalence rate in the larger
Turkana stands at 9.2 per cent, according to the
National Aids and STI Control Programme, in
rural areas, the rate is at 3.7 per cent, thanks
to culture.
There, mpango wa kando is akin to having a
death wish on one’s head as there are cultural
practices to detect the vice.
Picture this: Lokol (not his real name), a
traditionally married Turkana man, normally
returns home after a three-month absence as he
works away from the village.
Whenever he returns, he receives a warm welcome
from his wife and children.
On this particular day, however, as he was
settling down at home, the unexpected happened.
He started nose bleeding, something he had not
suffered for a long time. Similarly, the children
started to nose bleed. His goats too, suffered.
Instead of walking on their fours, the animals
dragged themselves around on their rumps

WIN 420K N INVEST
Kenya: For the last three months,
this page has featured innovative
and thought-provoking ideas aimed
at creating job opportunities and
making Business Beat readers self-
reliant.
This week is no different. But there
is a twist. Most of the ideas have
required you to put up varying levels
of capital to get started, but today,
you stand to receive an investment.
Do you have an innovative
agribusiness idea with the potential
to make an impact on a national
level? Then you could get Sh430,000
to roll it out.
The GrowthHub, a business incubator
and accelerator for early start-ups,
is looking for 12 teams of
entrepreneurs with an agribusiness
idea. They will be incorporated into
a 16-week programme that will see
the five best business ideas turned
into companies. To be eligible, you
need a mature agribusiness idea, to
have proof of concept and have
achieved validation from your
targeted audiece, plan to work on
the idea full time, and are ready to
build a sound product or service and
pilot it.
The kind of business ideas being
looked for include those that
increase income generation for
farmers, increase value addition,
improve farmers’ access to
information or offer them financial
solutions.
It could also be something that makes
the uptake of farm outputs easier,
increases adoption of modern
farming practices, improves food
security or improves nutrition.
Farming projects with no value
addition are not eliglbe, so if you
only carry out farming or rearing,
you will not qualify.
GrowthHub will shortlist 12
entrepreneurs with the most
innovative business ideas. They will
join a four-month programme split
in three parts.
The first comprises eight sessions that
will run over four weeks. The
participants will be taken through
ImpactCompass, a framework
designed to guide them through the
fundamentals of transforming their
idea into a company.
The second part will be two weeks
long, with the teams guided through
market testing, prototyping and
pitching of their ideas to determine
who gets the Sh430,000.
The third part will run over 10 weeks
and help participants execute and
implement their idea.
Should you join the programme, you
stand a chance to benefit from seed
funding of up to Sh8.6 million. You
will also get access to successful
entrepreneurs, get an opportunity to
be mentored and build networks, and
receive training on scaling up your
service or product.
The deadline for applications is
January 26, with the programme
expected to start on February 17 and
end on May 23.
You have to apply online on
www.thegrowthhub.com/agribusiness.

CIARA GOT JABULANI, I LV IT
Ciara is pregnant.
The 'Body Party' singer confirmed
she and her fiancé, producer
Future, are expecting their first
child together on US TV show 'The

When asked by host Barbara

stood up to reveal her sizeable
baby bump and said: "I'm so
excited for this year."
Ciara, 28, and Future, 30, got
engaged in October, after he

She later wrote on Twitter: "Today

Around the same time, Ciara first
sparked pregnancy rumours after
she was pictured wearing a
number of baggy tops.
The couple plan to marry later this
year and Ciara has already
admitted she is heavily involved in
planning the big day.
She said: "I think I'll be part
bridezilla, I'm not going to lie. But
I want to be a happy one. I still
want it to be a fun process, but I
want the dress to be perfect, I
want the cake to be perfect, I
want the food to be perfect. We're
both looking forward to it."
The marriage will be a first for
both, although according to
People.com, Future - real name
Nayvadius Cash - has three
children from previous
relationships; an 11-year-old son, a
four year old daughter, and a

Girl in school uniform
flushed from boyfriend's
house
Residents of Langa langa Mwisho
estate, Nakuru stormed a one
roomed rental house Friday to
rescue

By MAGDALENE WANJA

Two teenagers were Friday
arrested when irate residents of
Langa langa Mwisho estate,
Nakuru stormed a one roomed
rental house to rescue a form
three schoolgirl.
The girl was frogmarched to the
area Police post after a gender
activist and a group of irate
villagers stormed the house and
threatened to break in if the
teenagers failed to open the door.
The girl, still donning school
uniform and carrying a rucksack
on her back left peacefully amid
boos from residents forcing her to
seek refuge at the nearby police
post.
The form three student had been
released by her parents to go to
school as schools opened for the
2014 first term but decided to
‘pass’ by her boyfriend’s house.
Ms Jane Wahu, a gender advocate,
said that she received a call from
members of the public who were
disgusted by the girl’s action.
The girl was flushed from the one
roomed house where the two high
school teenagers lived.
Ms Wahu advised parents to be
taking their children to school on
opening days especially young
girls.
“Some students especially the
young girls do not report to school
once released by their parents and
it is a growing trend which calls
for parents to act,” she said.
Area assistant chief Mr Joseph
Macharia said that they arrested
the young men and the school girl
and handed them to the police for
investigations.
He said the girl’s parents had also
been contacted and informed of
the incident.

I was tickled to no end to discover,
by accident, that some scholars had
quoted yours truly in an academic
publication on culture and death in
West Africa. I laughed because it
seems I have written extensively on
funerals. They so fascinate me.
And so, because of a dry spell in
creativity, to death and funerals I
return. Are you aware that the
reason most people troop to church
religiously and even allow themselves
to be fleeced by crooks of the cloth is
because they are afraid of being
buried like pagans?
Tithes
So deep is this fear that upon death,
church operatives draw up in an
invoice of tithes never remitted, to
be paid before the good pastor can
string his collar around his chubby
throat for “dust to dust and ashes to
ashes”.
What everyone pretends to see,
however, is the ‘paganistic’ rituals
that ensue right before the pastor’s
nose. You see, where I come from,
every clan has certain burial rituals,
of course quite ‘satanic’ to the
brethren, that are held sacrosanct,
paramount being how you lie in your
grave and the direction your head
faces.
We don’t care whether you see visions
or have a direct line to St Peter.
The moment you are gone, after we
have gone through the pantomime of
pretending you are more Christian
than the Israelis themselves, we
proceed to the grave and your
remains are lowered to your final
resting place.
Paganistic
“Choir itupe wimbo (a song from the
choir please) the pastor intones. And
right there, as the man of God
robbed in white, Holy Book in hand,
sings imported songs translated into
our tongue, men of the clan open
your coffin and perform paganistic
rituals that include making you lie
according to the tenets of the clan.

EATING GRASS IN JESUS NAME
Pastor orders his
congregation to eat
grass

By Njambi Mungai (@njambie)
In Kenya, news of human beings
eating grass screams witchcraft and
is usually a punishment for stealing
stuff that does not belong to them.
However in South Africa, eating grass
according to one Pastor Lesego
Daniel, brings you closer to God. He
argued that humans can eat
anything to feed their bodies and
survive on whatever they chose to
eat.
Lesego ordered his congregation to
get on their knees and start
munching the lush green grass telling
them that it heals ailments.
And so they went, women and men,
kids and the elderly took to the
ground, feasting on grass like their
lives depended on it.
When they were done, the good old
pastor started stomping on them.
Yep…he climbed on them and trod his
feet all over the children of God.
At the end of it all, it would seem
that the human stomachs refused the
holy order and soon everyone was
running for the toilets to throw up.
Stomach ache and pains seemed to
have replaced the festive munching
of the grass.

ENGAGED FOR 15 YRS BT NO WEDDING IN SIGHT
Courtesy
It’s an open secret that most men
dislike weddings. To most men, a
wedding is pretty much a woman’s
affair in which they (men) are
nagged to participate. Men’s
lackadaisical attitude at weddings
speaks it all.
Knowing what weddings mean to
women, men, being sly and cunning
as they are, engineered a scam that
has (and still is) going on without
women being any wiser. Men promise
women weddings and to make the
deal sweeter, they engage them.
Unfortunately, that is where it ends.
They struggle to live happily ever
after without necessarily going the
whole hog to say ‘I do’.
Unknown to many women, perhaps, is
the adage that a man who can’t lie,
can’t marry!
December, a month in which many
weddings take place, came and
went. Many weddings took place but
a couple were postponed not for the
first, second or third time, but for
the umpteenth time.
A friend to this writer shocked him
with details of a frustrated woman,
Nduta, who has been duped into an
‘engagement marathon’ for 23 solid
years. However, when contacted for
a phone interview, she never
confirmed or denied the allegations.
But implicitly gave credence to the
allegation by her careful and well
thought-out answers as she shyly
turned down an interview request.
“Some things happen in life and
there is nothing you can do about
them. In fact, I had even forgotten
that I’m still engaged, you have just
reminded me. You can’t force a man
to wed you. I’m afraid I will not
reveal private things to a nosy
journalist I have not even met,” she
said.
Cynthia has been engaged for close
to 21 years. Apparently, 21 years
ago, at a swanky hotel in Mombasa
where they both lived then, her man
went on his knee with a tiny box in
his hand and proposed, complete with
a speech. In his speech, Cynthia’s
husband waxed lyrical about how
much he loved her; how he wanted to
wed and spend his entire life with
her, make babies and whatnot.
Cynthia, smitten and excited,
immediately got into a frenzy;
informing her friends, showing off
her engagement ring and planning
for her wedding. In a strange turn
of events, when the planned date
approached, she was expectant. The
wedding was called off,
indefinitely.

REACTION OF A "RICH KID" IN MEETING "POOR KENYAns"
A driver working for a prominent
political family got the shock of the
year over the weekend. He regretted
a decision to drive through one of
the city’s crowded bus termini on his
way from the airport.
This was because of the questions he
was bombarded with by the son of his
employer who had just jetted back
from his high school studies abroad.
“Is there a concert in town or what?”
asked Mdosi Junior, when he saw
huge crowds at the termini.
With Mdosi Junior’s short stays in the
country restricted to shopping malls,
exclusive holiday resorts and golf
camps, this was unfamiliar territory
for the highly sheltered teenager.
When told that these were stranded
people following night travel ban,
Mdosi Junior was quite shocked.
“Why can‘t they use their personal
cars instead?” he asked. “I am sure
those ones are not banned from
travelling at night. And even if their
personal cars are grounded for some
mechanical reason or the other, they
can take them to the garage where
they will get a temporary
replacement car.
Any self-respecting garage should
have such a facility!” he said.

The Mateke singer was pictured advancing killer
kicks to numerous superstars from a photo taken
in one of her electric dance performances.
“I didn’t even know what was going on until a
friend called me yesterday and asked me to
check what people where discussing on Twitter. It
is the most hilarious thing on earth. It cracked
my ribs and up to now, I can’t help laughing,”

LUPITA TAKES OVER HOLLYWOOD
The internet is buzzing worldwide this morning
about our very own Lupita Nyong’o! And with good
reason because the actress literally sizzled on
the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards held
at Los Angeles.
Draped in a simple yet dramatic red hot Ralph
Lauren creation, Lupita was easily one of the
best dressed ladies at the star studded event.
She also cropped her hair and gave the outfit
very minimal accessories to allow the dress
maximum focus.
Ever since she started working the red carpet,
Lupita has not had a single red carpet flop and
every one of those looks have been chosen as
favorite. Her beauty, flawless skin, undeniably
hot body and winning smile have played a great
part in working those outfits.
She unfortunately missed out on the award for
supporting actress in a film for her breakout role
in director Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave”,
for which she was nominated.
The movie was pegged as a favorite for the
awards coming in with 7 nominations but only
bagging the Best Film Drama.

HOW KSH100 CAN MAKE KENYANS RUN UP N DOWN THE STREETS
Turkana residents in
protests against British Oil Company
Tullow in October last year. They
accused the firm of ignoring them.

By Jacob Ngetich
Turkana: Turkana leaders actively
participated in organising recent
protests against Tullow oil, The
Standard has learnt.
Investigations reveal that a day
prior to the demonstrations that
rocked the oil fields of Turkana and
led to the suspension of exploration
activities, some leaders from the
county paid residents of Lokichar
and Lokori to protest against the
British oil company.
Residents from the two areas said
they were paid to participate in the
demonstrations.
“We were given Sh100 each and
promised a similar balance. However,
we did not receive the remaining
amount. I took part in the protests
because I was paid,” said Josephine
Loperot. Ewosit Ekai, a resident of
Lokichar, said he took part in the
demonstrations because of money.
“At first we were promised some good
money. This later changed to Sh100.
The leaders used us to hit Tullow,”
said Ekai.
There have been allegations of
leaders having vested interests, key
among them pushing for business
deals.
Residents of villages around Ngamia
I, the main oil field, said they were
not involved in the protests.
The demonstrations held in October
last year were led by MPs James
Lomenen (Turkana South) and
Nicholas Ng’ikor (Turkana East).
The leaders marched to the oil fields
to protest alleged discrimination in
employment, tenders and transport
contracts by Tullow Oil Company. The
protests prompted immediate
suspension of oil drilling in blocks
10BB and 13T for fear of
employees’ safety.
Tullow had struck oil in Ngamia 1,
Etuko, Twiga 1, Ekale 1, Wildcat and
South Well wells.
Disrupt livelihoods
Ekwam Philip, a resident, noted that
the demonstrations did not achieve
much, but helped to create a security
scare and disrupt residents’
livelihoods.
“The protesters were self-seekers.
They did not represent us at all; our
concerns were not even captured in
their protests,” observed Ekwam.
However, in defence of the
demonstration that led to unease in
the region, MP Lomenen said
constitutionally the demonstrations
were legal and pressure from his
constituents forced him to act.

NAIROBI, KENYA: The High Court has given
President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William
Ruto 14 days to respond to a suit seeking to
remove them from office.
The Attorney General Githu Muigai, acting on
behalf of Uhuru and Ruto asked Justice Isaac
Lenaola for time to file a response objecting to
the application.
The Judge noted that he had given the AG time to
respond to the application on December 10 last
year yet they had not responded.
"I have no response from your office and I do
not want to make a ruling without the response
of the AG," said Lenaola.
He directed the AG to file a response for the
application within 14 days and appear before
him for hearing on January 24.
Isaac Aluochier wants Uhuru and Ruto to cease
from holding the top jobs in the country for
allegedly being in office illegally.
He argued that prior to becoming President,
between August 27,2010 and April 2012, Uhuru
was Kanu Chairman and continued to hold the
position of an appointed Deputy Prime Minister
of Kenya right until he assumed office as
President.
He accused Ruto of prior to becoming Deputy
President, between August 27 2010 and August
2011, was both the Deputy Party Leader, Strategy
of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) an
appointed Minister for Higher Education, Science
and Technology.
Aluochier cited Article 77(2) of the Constitution
which prohibits an appointed State officer from
holding office in a political party.
"By the Respondents holding both the offices of
appointed Ministers in the Cabinet, and political
party offices, they contravened Article 77(2) of
the Constitution," he said.
The petitioner wants the court declare that by
the operation of Article 75(3) of the
Constitution, the Respondents were rendered
disqualified from holding any other State office.
In his petition, he wants the court to order the
respondents’ holding of the offices of President
and Deputy President to cease with immediate
effect, as they are not qualified to hold these or
any other State offices.
The petitioner also wants the court to order the
duo to pay general damages amounting to the
cost of holding a presidential by-election, and
the sum total of salaries and allowances they
received as State officers over the period.
He argued that Pursuant to Article 75(2) of the
Constitution, the Respondents had to be
disciplined for their contraventions of Article
77(2), a discipline that was not carried out
against them.
